Key Objectives for the Director of Music Ministries/Choir Director:
The Director of Music Ministries/Choir Director will provide opportunities to involve as many as possible in the music ministry of our church by encouraging participation while striving to provide a quality experience and worthy performance through which people may lead in worship to inspire worshipers to serve.
General Description of Duties:
The Director of Music Ministries/Choir Director will oversee all aspects of the music program at First United Methodist Church in Stephenville. General duties include working with the music staff, pastoral staff, program staff and volunteers to plan and facilitate all worship services and special events as needed. Other obligations involve leading music at the 10:50 Sunday service, providing music appropriate for the theme and season and coordinating with and supporting the Contemporary Worship Leader in their work. All duties and interactions will be carried out in a professional manner, maintaining at all times harmonious, constructive and productive relationships with fellow staff members, church members, church committees and the Senior Pastor.
Major Program/Event Responsibilities:
Director of Music Ministries/Choir Director will provide for any program, special service or event which involves the Music Ministry of the church (i.e. services for Renewal, Christmas Eve and Holy Week, special programs/events for Christmas and Easter, A Week of Making Music and Art [AWOMMA], etc.).
Continuing Education/Personal Goals:
Director of Music Ministries/Choir Director will earn certification through Summer Church Music School at SMU. The Director will maintain an ongoing program of professional development to include participation in workshops, seminars and conferences provided by Choristers Guild, and similar organizations. It is also crucial to remain current with church choral literature.
Specific Tasks and Responsibilities:
• Plan worship services in collaboration with Senior Pastor and keyboardist (hymns, Psalter, special music, etc.).
• Provide leadership, support, training, resources and assistance for weekly rehearsals of the Chancel Choir, handbell choir(s), Cherub, Chanter and Caroler Choirs, Four Tunes, Youth Choir and other vocal and instrumental groups to perform in worship services in keeping with the liturgical or local church calendar, or any special worship emphasis as needed.
• Maintain active membership for the church in pertinent professional music organizations.
• Recruit to grow and maintain musical groups (e.g. a youth handbell choir) for which the Director of Music Ministries/Choir Director has responsibility; support the recruiting efforts of the Children’s Choirs volunteer directors.
• Arrange for special music and soloists for Sunday services.
• Participate in church staff meetings, Church Council meetings, Worship Committee meetings, and Music Committee Meetings.
• Prepare and submit an annual Music Ministries budget.
• Oversee maintenance of the music library.
• Supervise the care and maintenance of all musical instruments (organ, handbells, etc.)
• Ensure there is a substitute keyboardist in case of illness or vacation.
